Goal Setting 2020

Many people make their New Year’s resolutions at the beginning of the year. However, these goals quickly fizzle out due to lack of clarity and commitment. The habit of setting goals and better yet, writing your goals is of crucial importance to your success. There is a power in goal setting that gives you a jumpstart to the life of your dreams.

Numerous studies have shown only three percent of the population set goals and only about one percent write them down. All successful people spend time in clearly defining and writing down their goals in details.

Steve Jobs was a passionate goal-setter, setting long-term and short-term goals that allowed him to create products that revolutionized the way we communicate.

Some key points to consider before you set your goals for 2020:

  1. Why do we need to write our goals
    • Goals inspire us and make us grow. Nobody jumps out of the bed every morning, excited to go to work, so he can pay his bills. There is simply no inspiration in that.
    • When you put your pen on paper, you turn your thoughts into something tangible. It turns your fantasy into a vision you can see and feel. It brings an order in your mind. Goals give us a clear picture that excite us and inspire us to get out there and take actions that move us closer to our dreams.
  2. Audacious Goals
    • Always go after big, lofty goals. Don’t settle for small, easier goals just because it is the logical thing to do. In fact, before you write your goals, let your imagination wander. Let yourself dream big, think about the things you always wanted to do, be or have.
    • Do NOT give any speck of concern as to ‘HOW’ you will achieve this goal. You do not have to know the ‘how’ at this point. I know it baffles the logical mind. But there is a process to invoke the ‘how’ by tapping into your subconscious mind (more on that later). But for now, put all limitations aside and pretend if money or resources was not an issue, what is it that you would absolutely love to do.
  3. Present Tense
    • Always write your goals in present tense, not something that will happen in future. This is because your subconscious mind only understands NOW. For example, instead of saying “I will have my own business”, say something like “I am a successful business owner”.
  4. Be Specific:  Make it measurable and add a time frame to it.
    • It is not enough to say “I want more money” or “I want to be happy”. Be specific and put a time frame to it. Here’s a model suggested by my mentor Bob Proctor:
      • “I am so happy and grateful now that I am earning ‘X’ amount of dollars before the end of 2020”.
      • Or “I am so happy and grateful now that I have signed up 50 clients before the end of June 2020”.

Now with these suggestions in mind, write your goals on a piece of paper or even better, on a small index card and read it every day, at least twice a day (first thing in the morning and last thing at night). This is to impress it upon your subconscious mind that will then start working on it. Your mind is a goal-striving mechanism that will guide you and steer you in the right direction to achieve your goals, once you have programmed it.
